Newton Housing Needs Analysis
Newton, MA
The City of Newton, located five miles west of central Boston, is viewed as a highly desirable place to live. It offers residents a nationally recognized primary and secondary school system, substantial open space and park amenities, and easy access into Boston via the MBTA. As a result of its success, the City had steadily seen its income diversity decline, with the population of households earning over $200,000 a year having grown substantially by 2016.

Facing high construction costs and expensive land prices, City leadership sought help in identifying new ways to maintain income diversity, by retaining and expanding its price-appropriate housing supply.

RKG Associates partnered with internationally-renowned planning firm Sasaki Associates to prepare a comprehensive housing study for the City of Newton. The report focused on assessing place-based needs, opportunities, and strategies for the creation and preservation of diverse housing. RKG and Sasaki also worked with the City on creating a customized work plan to steer city officials and elected officials through subsequent housing approval processes.
